1. Painting
A can of paint or two can transform a whole room. Stick to neutral or light colours for the walls and a crisp white for the ceiling. Light colours open up a room and will make it appear larger. Light coloured walls also reflect any entering sunlight, making rooms appear brighter. For a bit of contrast, paint one wall in a darker shade of the colour used for the other three. One wall of a different shade can provide a focal point in the room and add a decorative touch.

2. Cushions
Rather than replacing all of your furniture, simply replace your cushions. Choose colours that compliment your walls or colours in opposite tones to create interest. There are a variety of colours and patterns to choose from and, when placed in a room with neutral walls, create visual appeal.

3. Rugs
Whether you have hard floors are wall-to-wall carpeting, adding a rug is a quick way to brighten any room in your home. The rug should complement your window treatments and cushions. Try to find a rug that has colours in the same family as your accessories. Lay the rug in different places and in both directions to see what you prefer. Remember, there are no hard and fast rules that say where or how a rug should be laid.

4. Rearrange and Re-purpose
Chances are that your home is filled with pieces you love. Look around the house and see if there is a piece of furniture in one room that you can use in another. If not, rearrange the furniture in the room receiving the make-over. Sometimes simply changing the arrangement of the furniture is enough to give an old room new appeal.

5. Curtains
An easy way to update a room is to replace the window treatments. Choose fabrics that are light and airy to take the weight out of the room. Lighter fabrics will also allow more light into the room giving it an instant brightness. If you are handy with a sewing machine, give creating your own curtains a go; it really is quite simple.
